Vassilis Pavlopoulos was born in Athens, Greece. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Education, and Psychology (major in Psychology) of the University of Athens, in 1992. He conducted his doctoral dissertation at the Department of Psychology of the same university with a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation, under the supervision of Prof. G. Georgas. His Ph.D thesis was on parental perceptions of children’s personality (1998, graduated with honors). Between 2000-2003, he worked as a teaching and research scientist at the Department of Psychology, University of Crete, and at the Department of Primary Education, University of Patras. Since 2004 he has been a full member of the teaching staff at the Department of Psychology, University of Athens, at the positions of Lecturer (2004-2008) and Assistant Professor (2009-present) of Cross-Cultural Psychology. He teaches Cross-Cultural and Social Psychology courses to undergraduate and graduate (Master's) students at the Universities of Athens and Democritus (Thrace). He has supervised numerous degree theses. Also, he is coordinator of the Students' Practice Committee of the Department of Psychology.
He has participated in 23 research projects of
the University of Athens, 14 of which in collaboration with international
institutes or organizations. Some of these programs were funded by
the European Union and national resources.
His current research interests focus on acculturation and adaptation of
immigrants, perceived discrimination and beliefs about justice, cross-cultural study of
values, and the
cultural processes of collective intentions.
He was Secretary General of the 18th International Congress of Cross-Cultural Psychology (2006, Isle of Spetses, Greece), and of the 13th European Conference on Personality (2006, Athens, Greece). Also, he participated in the organizing committee of four Hellenic Conferences in Social Psychology (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009). He is a member of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, the European Association of Social Psychology, the European Association of Personality Psychology, and the European Association for Research in Adolescence. He is also a member of the Hellenic Psychological Society (co-ordinator of the Social Psychology section of the Society for the years 2007-2013), the Greek Society for Social Psychology, and the Hellenic Society of Mental Hygiene and Child Neuropsychiatry (Board member for the years 2005-2009). Since 2010, he has been a member of the Hellenic committee for the recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, as well as a member of a Greek citizenship committee of the Hellenic Ministry of Interior.
